What is home health nursing really like?
Visit nursing vs one-to-one shifts, what a day looks like, and who it suits.
Two kinds of home care nursing
Visit nursing: you drive to several patients a day for skilled visits like wound care, medication teaching or post-hospital checks, then document each visit. Often paid per visit or salaried.
Shift or “private duty” nursing: you stay with one patient for a full shift, often a child or adult on a ventilator or feeding tube. Hourly, with a lot of control over your schedule.
Who it suits
Nurses who like autonomy and one-on-one time with patients. You won’t have a unit full of colleagues down the hall, so good agencies give you on-call clinical support and solid orientation.
Good to ask in the interview
- How are cases matched to where I live?
- Is mileage reimbursed?
- Who do I call at 2am if something goes wrong?
- How long is paid orientation?
